Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to question certain decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
