Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
