Advocacy Group Asserts to Have Extracted Countless of Audio Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights organization has claimed to have scraped a vast number of tracks from the popular streaming service and is getting ready to publish them online.

Potential Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Training

Industry experts noted the apparent leak could aid AI companies searching for material to train their technology.

A group known as Anna’s Archive said it had obtained 86 million music files from Spotify and 256 million entries of associated data such as performer and album names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million songs, stated that the leak did not represent its entire inventory.

“We have identified and disabled the nefarious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” said a Spotify spokesperson.

The Stockholm-based company, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an inquiry into unauthorized access found a external actor scraped public metadata and employed questionable methods to circumvent DRM protections.

Archive's Stated Goal and Concerns

The streaming service does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for providing links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group asserted the audio files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be distributed via ‘torrents’, a means of sharing large digital files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great start,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “safeguarding humanity’s knowledge and heritage”.

AI Training and Intellectual Property Debate

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ rights, said the leaked music would likely be utilized for developing AI models.

“Educating models on illegally sourced material is unfortunately widespread in the AI industry, so this accessed music is highly likely to end up instructing AI models,” he said.

The Anna’s Archive site alludes to a large online archive, a vast online repository of copyrighted books that has reportedly been leveraged by Meta to train its AI models.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on the professional network that members of the public could in theory “build their own private free version of the service”. The executive added it could also allow technology firms to “train on modern music at scale”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a key issue between artists, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Government Considerations and Responses

Across Britain, artists and writers have protested against a ministerial suggestion to let AI companies utilize protected work without permission unless the owner signals. Virtually every participant to a government call for evidence on the proposal has supported artists’ concerns.

A government minister for technology, research and development informed parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the matter, adding that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The government has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
